Solar-Powered Reverse Osmosis System – Rural Village near Johannesburg
Project type
Solar Powered Reverse Osmosis
Date
November 2022
Location
Johannesburg
Project Overview
In 2022, we completed a full solar-powered reverse osmosis water purification system for a rural community just outside Johannesburg. The area lacked access to safe, potable water, and the available borehole water was not fit for human consumption due to high levels of contaminants.
⚙️ System Overview
The system was designed to run completely off-grid using solar power and consists of:
✅ 1. Water Source & Storage
Vega solar-powered borehole pump to extract raw water
Water stored in JoJo tanks before treatment
✅ 2. Reverse Osmosis Treatment
Solar booster feed pump transfers water from storage to the RO system
Pre-Filtration Stages:
Stage 1: Activated glass media and carbon filter
Stage 2: 3-stage Big Blue cartridge filter
Stage 3: Triple-pass reverse osmosis membranes
RO Output: Produces up to 750L/hr of clean drinking water
✅ 3. High Pressure Pumping & Control
Leo LVR vertical multistage high-pressure pump
Controlled by a Vega solar inverter, providing energy-efficient pressure control
Impact
This system now provides safe, clean drinking water for an underserved rural community — without reliance on grid power. The installation supports both health and sustainability goals while requiring minimal operational oversight.
