Solar-Powered Water Purification System for Limpopo Village
Project type
Solar Water Purification System
Date
November 2022
Location
Limpopo, South Africa
Project type
Solar Water Purification System
Project Overview
In response to the critical need for clean drinking water in a remote village in Limpopo, South Africa, our team successfully designed and installed a fully off-grid solar water purification system. The project was aimed at transforming unsafe borehole water into potable water for the entire rural community — without relying on Eskom or any external power supply.
Key Features and Components
1. Custom-Built Water Purification Unit: Designed specifically for borehole water treatment in rural African settings.
2. Chlorine Dosing System: Ensures disinfection of harmful pathogens.
3. pH Correction Unit: Balances water pH to safe and acceptable levels for human consumption.
4. Manganese Removal Filter: Extracts excessive manganese and iron commonly found in borehole water.
5. Activated Carbon Filtration: Improves water taste and removes odours and organic contaminants.
6. 3-Stage Big Blue Filtration (5–1–0.2 Micron): Provides deep filtration for sediment, fine particles, and bacterial reduction.
Solar Pumping System
A. Vega Solar Borehole Pump: Efficient water abstraction directly from the borehole using solar energy.
B. Vega Solar Booster Pump: Distributes treated water across the village with consistent pressure and flow, powered entirely by solar.
Project Impact
This solar water purification solution now provides reliable access to safe, clean, and great-tasting drinking water for over 200 residents. It operates 100% off-grid, making it a sustainable, low-maintenance option ideal for rural deployment across South Africa.
