Iron is a common contaminant found in groundwater due to its presence in underground rock formations and the infiltration of precipitation water. As water moves through these formations, certain amounts of iron dissolve and accumulate in aquifers, becoming a source of ground water contamination. After the iron has been precipitated through aeration or chemical oxidation, various filtration techniques can be employed. Sediment filters are commonly used to remove large particles, followed by carbon filters that effectively eliminate smaller iron particles. Water softeners can also be utilized but may need frequent maintenance due to iron build-up that often clogs the system. Aeration, chemical oxidation, and filtration are viable options, but the choice depends on the iron concentration level.
